The Vining Repertory Company was revived in 1961 at the Varsity Theatre through the sponsorship of Southern Oregon College. The festival produced four plays at the Varsity in November and December that year, a concert series in 1964, and from 1966 to 1969, a ballad opera series as well as the plays in the Elizabethan Theatre. Pictured is a volunteer hostess strolling through the Varsity lobby.

The Beggar’s Opera was produced in 1966 and directed by Carl Ritchie. Angus Bowmer played Peachum and Pat Patton, who would work into the 1990s acting, stage managing, and directing at OSF, played Lockit. The musicals were hugely popular with audiences, and their appeal, Bowmer noted, pointed to the practicality of non-Shakespearean performances and the dire need for a theater in which to perform them.
